Hong Kong stopovers
I stopped into Hong Kong for two nights either side of my recent trip to Siem Reap and because I’ve done most of the attractions before I took the time to wander around and soak up this amazing city.
The trip started with a delay. I arrived at the airport for my Cathay Pacific flight, checked in, went through immigration and security and was waiting at the gate like everyone else. We were supposed to depart at midnight and following a number of delay announcements for boarding, were told our flight was cancelled at 2.30am.
So I lined up for a taxi voucher and headed home for some sleep. In the morning I checked online for an updated departure time which was 3.30pm and then moved to 7.30pm when we eventually departed 19.5 hours later. It’s the first time I’ve experienced such a delay but it didn’t impact on my trip too much.
We arrived into Hong Kong International Airport (one of the best in the world) at 3.45am the following morning so it was a taxi (approximately AU$50) to the Eaton Hotel in Kowloon and straight to sleep for me.
I spent my days in Hong Kong wandering Nathan Road, Kowloon Park, Garden of Stars (replaced Avenue of Stars), Harbour City Shopping Centre, Canton Road and Temple Street Night Market.
I also enjoyed the view of the Hong Kong island skyline from Kowloon pier by day and night. Every night at 8pm you can watch the Symphony of Lights, a light and music display off more than 40 skyscrapers.
I indulged in some dim sum with the locals (literally) at Dim Dim Sum Jordan. I ordered steamed shrimp dumplings, BBQ pork buns and crispy rice rolls with shrimp which was my favourite dish.
It’s always nice to visit a big city and these stopovers gave me a good dose.
Next week I will be taking a break from travel diaries and sharing my birthday weekend dining (and drinking) wanders – yes it’s come around that quick!
