Margaret River with madre
My mum had been dropping hints for a weekend away with me for several weeks so I finally committed and planned a wander to Margaret River together in July.
We wanted to do a mix of our own thing and some tours to support the local tourism economy and managed to pack a lot into four days.
On our way down we had a burger and a beer at Beer Farm in Metricup. We both had the Angus burger and an ale… yes I’m slowly getting into beer. It was a cool day but beautiful in the sun.
After lunch we drove through Cowaramup and decided to have a wander of the local homeware and produce stores. We also found some wall art wings to photography with.
We had a one-hour guided tour of Lake Cave booked for mid afternoon. The exterior of the cave is beautiful with large limestone rocks and a forest of towering karri trees. You enter through the sinkhole in the forest and go down a narrow staircase into the cave with your guide… there are 325 steps down in total.
Inside are actively dripping crystal formations surrounding the lake and a walkway to lead you through.
After checking in to our accommodation, we decided to take our bottle of wine and a packet of chips and went for a sunset vino at Surfers Point in Prevelly. It was perfect.
We started our Saturday with a wholesome cinnamon roll and coffee at the Margaret River Farmers’ Market outside The Margaret River TAFE campus. The markets had a mix of ready to eat meals, fresh produce and local artisans wares.
We then hopped on our Bushtucker Tours bus for a full day wine tour. We visited Jarvis Estate, Knotting Hill, Bettenay Wines & Nougat, Rosily and Cowaramup Brewery. Like all Australian wine tours, there were plenty of tastings to go around.
Lunch was interesting, they definitely play on the bush tucker name. It was set up for us but the tour guide when we were at Knotting Hill and included a spread of emu meat and kangaroo meat amongst other meats, cheese, dip and a range of bush fruits and chutney.
During lunch everyone loosened up a little and started to mingle. We made friends and mum became everyone’s mum. After the tour we continued drinking with our new friends and then enjoyed dinner and dancing at Settler’s Tavern.
The next morning we enjoyed breakfast at White Elephant Cafe overlooking Gnarabup Beach. After a day of drinking I was in need of something greasy so enjoyed the bacon and egg roll on a brioche bun and it was delicious. The seagulls definitely keep you on your toes while you are eating so watch out for them stealing your food.
After breakfast we went on a coastal drive and enjoyed some time in nature at Smiths Beach, Canal Rocks, Injidup Beach and Gracetown.
We also enjoyed some tea and scones in the sunshine at Cape Lavender Teahouse and wine tastings at Swings and Roundabouts.
For our last night it was mum’s choice of an Italian dinner at La Scarpetta Trattoria on the main strip. I had the canestrini with oxtail, mum had the mushroom ravioli and we shared polenta chips for entrée. It was a filling day but all very delicious.
On our last day we had breakfast at the Margaret River Bakery before the drive home. We stopped at the Bunbury Farmers Market for lunch and grocery shopping for the first time and it was next level. It was a great way to end the trip.
