Overseas to Singapore

Another year is almost over and I can’t believe I only managed one overseas holiday throughout it all.

I guess it makes sense with moving home and starting a new job but still it has been very light on for a couple of year’s now.

In June (I know my travel diary is very delayed) I had the opportunity to travel to Singapore for work and stay at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore.

The last time I travelled to Singapore was ten year’s ago so there was a lot to catch up on. Arriving by midday on a Sunday allowed me a small period of time to fit in as much wandering as possible with a colleague.

We walked a short 15 minutes across Helix Bridge to Gardens by the Bay where we explored flowers from around the world in the Flower Dome, the waterfalls of the Cloud Forest and the outdoor Supertree Grove vertical garden.

Following, we went up to Marina Bay Sands’ rooftop bar accessible to the public, SkyBar, for an afternoon cocktail whilst soaking in the views across the bay.

We continued our cocktail tasting at Long Bar at Raffles Singapore where we had the iconic Singapore Sling accompanied by a bag of peanuts. I couldn’t quite grasp the concept of peeling the peanut shell and throwing it on the floor. There were shells making a mess everywhere.

Our day of wandering ended with $5 chicken rice at an indoor hawker market. Such a simple dish, yet so flavoursome!

For two days we were in orientation but had the freedom to dine out for dinner. One dish I had been wanting to try for a while was chilli crab. We asked our Concierge for recommendations and were informed about the chain Jumbo Seafood. We opted for the East Coast location to enjoy dining along the water and away from the busy tourist areas.

We had the mud crab with the special chilli crab sauce which had a sweet tomato flavour with a mild amount of chilli. We were recommended the bread rolls for dipping in the sauce and these had a sweet flavour too similar to a brioche. It’s very messy eating, hence the requirement of a bib!

The next night we dined at Burnt Ends, a modern barbecue with an open kitchen and grills owned by an Australian chef. We shared a variety of dishes and a bottle of red and ended the dining experience with toasted marshmallows, an Oreo like biscuit and chocolate with caramel.

The location of the restaurant between Chinatown and Marina Bay was surrounded by gorgeous heritage buildings.

Although the wander was for work, it was still a mini holiday and I thoroughly enjoyed all the wanders I was able to fit in.

Prior to being offered my new job, I had planned to travel to Spain, Portugal and Morocco this year which had to be postponed to next year. I can’t wait to start planning this wander.
