Moreton Island as a tourist
A couple of weekends ago I wandered to Moreton Island for the day with my cousin and her boyfriend.
We did the Beach Day Cruise to Tangalooma Island Resort which is the easiest option as a visitor without a 4WD as it is a sand island.
The day included return ferry tickets, a drink on the ferry and a $20 meal voucher at select Tangalooma eateries. There are options to do whale watching, a desert safari, jet boat ride, snorkelling around the wrecks, dolphin viewing and dolphin feeding but we decided to spend the day on the island doing our own thing.
The island has a whole range of activities available including stand up paddle boarding, segway, quad bike and sand bike tours, snorkelling, sand boarding experiences and more.
We took the 7am ferry from Pinkenba Wharf which was a 1 hour 15 minute ferry trip to Tangalooma Wharf. Once we got there we found a hiking map at the tour information centre.
We hiked to the Desert which took us south from Tangalooma Island Resort along the sand to a track and stairs that took us up into the bushland through to the Desert, which was a large area of sand dunes in the middle of the island.
I would recommend doing this hike first thing as no one else was there sand boarding for the day yet when we got there so we enjoyed the serenity and natural beauty of the desert to ourselves. As we turned around to continue the hike back to the resort, there were a bunch of kids running up with sand boards. We picked the perfect moment.
We continued along the bushwalk trail which took us north up the island back towards the resort and enjoyed a viewpoint along the way.
Once we were back on the sand, it was time for a beach break.
After lunch we walked north along the sand to the Tangalooma Wrecks, a cluster of 15 vessels sunk in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It’s a popular area for boats to dock and visitors to snorkel around the wrecks.
We had another swim and then it was time to board the 4pm ferry back to Brisbane.
Even though the day started overcast and with a bit of drizzle, the sun came out and it ended up being perfect. I really enjoyed our day on Moreton Island!
Now I’m so excited for Fraser Island and Noosa next week.
