My kind of travel
Having worked as a travel consultant for two and a half years now, I am always envious of those who can travel solo and those who can travel without an itinerary.
For me, I like to travel with someone whether it’s a friend, partner or family. I very rarely travel alone; only if it’s a work trip, or when I was living in London I did a couple of day trips by myself to tick them off the list.
It’s not because I don’t like meeting new people or am scared, it’s because I like the company, there’s someone to take photos with or photos of me, there’s someone to share the experience with and you can talk about that time you were away for years to come.
It’s not always easy to travel with people if you’re not used to living with them. Some of my best trips have been with my mum and sister. There’s always so many laughs, tears, dress ups and memories we cherish.
For my holidays I always have a day by day itinerary which is something I put together myself. The itinerary will consist of attractions I want to visit, shows or entertainment I want to watch, pre-booked day tours and dining experiences. I like having an itinerary so that I can see as much as possible while in each destination. I’m definitely not a traveller who likes to relax.
I’ve only done a couple of guided tours – a Contiki on my first trip to Europe when I was 21, a Busabout Croatia sail when I was living in London and a Topdeck in Vietnam last year.
I like tours as you can see a lot more in a short space of time and it’s so easy – you don’t have to think about a lot besides what time to be ready. I’m not against doing touring in the future, but it would mainly be in destinations I’m not familiar with.
After holidays I always go back to work the next day. I never struggle from jet lag and I think it’s cause I get straight back into routine – sleeping local hours and forcing myself to stay awake during the day with work.
Each year I like to wander to at least one new destination. This year it’s been a few places – Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Siem Reap. Next year so far it’s Kuala Lumpur and Penang in January.
Next week I’m going to share some more food wanders.
