Top travel tips
Having been an avid traveller for the last ten years and being a travel consultant for over a year now, I thought I would share some of my top travel tips with you.
- One of the most important requirements of travelling is ensuring your passport is valid beyond 6 months of return date. It’s not every country that requires this but the majority do so it’s best to stick to this rule.
- Check if you require a visa to transit and/or stop in the countries you are visiting.
- Check maximum length of stay in countries and continents, especially Europe which is maximum stay of 90 stays inclusive of all countries you visit and the USA which is maximum stay of 90 days inclusive of time spent in the rest of North America.
- Be organised. Pack in advance so you don’t forget anything, have an itinerary or plan in place, and have all your travel documents in order.
- Use an international currency card for safety and convenience. Then you don’t have to worry about carrying too much cash and fluctuating exchange rates and additional fees for using your bank card overseas.
- Travel light. Most hotel rooms come with hair dryers and bathroom products so you can reduce the number of toiletries you take. Stick to 3-4 pairs of shoes and pack clothes that can be mixed and matched for variety.
- Choose your seat on the plane at time of booking (if the airline permits) so you are more likely to get your preference – the flight can be the most uncomfortable thing about travelling and your seat can play a big part in that especially if you prefer window or aisle.
- Get into the country’s time zone as quickly as possible to avoid jet lag prolonging. I always set my alarm to wake up at appropriate times in the morning and drink caffeine if I need help getting through my first few days. The last thing you want to do is waste your days away on holiday sleeping.
- Find out what is appropriate for tipping in the country you are visiting so you don’t offend anyone.
- Write a list of the most important things you want to experience in the cities you are visiting to make the most of your time there and so you don’t miss out on anything you really want to experience.
